We have received our second supply  of the H1N1 vaccine. We strongly recommend that pregnant women be vaccinated for both H1N1 and seasonal flu.

If you are pregnant, you can call our office and schedule a lab visit for the H1N1 flu shot vaccine injection.

Some pregnant women are concerned about the safety of 2009 H1N1 flu and seasonal flu vaccines. Both flu vaccines are safe. Vaccination is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself and your baby. Vaccination is safe for you and your baby. Both shots protect your baby from getting the flu. Your baby cannot get the flu shot until 6 months of age. The seasonal flu vaccine has been given safely to millions of pregnant women over the past 45 years. Flu shots have not been shown to cause harm to pregnant women or their babies. The 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine is made the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine.

The risk for a pregnant woman and her unborn baby of getting sick with the flu is far greater than being vaccinated.

If you did not get the flu vaccines during pregnancy, you should still get them even if you are breast feeding. This will help prevent you and your baby from getting the flu.

There are some people who should not get any flu vaccine without first consulting a physician. These include:

  • People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.

  • People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination.

  • People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously.

  • Children younger than 6 months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for this age group).

  • People who have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (they should wait until they recover to get vaccinated).

What Pregnant Women Should Know About H1N1 (formerly called swine flu) Virus

H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. Illness with the new H1N1 virus has ranged from mild to severe; however, pregnancy and other previously recognized high risk medical conditions from seasonal influenza appear to be associated with increased risk of complications.

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against novel H1N1 virus.  However, a novel H1N1 vaccine is currently in production and may be ready for the public in the fall. As always, a vaccine will be available to protect against seasonal influenza.

Immunization for seasonal flu is available NOW and the Immunization for H1N1 will be available in mid-October. We recommend that ALL pregnant women receive immunization for the seasonal flu, and will strongly recommend that pregnant women ALSO receive immunization for H1N1 when it becomes available.

All pregnant patients need to contact us immediately if you are experiencing the symptoms of influenza or if you had close exposure to persons with influenza.

Certain antiviral drugs can be prescribed  to fight against the flu by keeping the germs from growing in your body. These medicines can make you feel better faster and make your symptoms milder. These medicines work best when started soon after symptoms begin or within two [2] days.

New options for minimally invasive surgery: Da Vinci Robotic System &
Single Port laparoscopy.

All of our gynecologist perform minimally invasive surgery. We now have added new options for minimally invasive surgery with Dr. Gostal Arcelin using the Intuitive Surgical DaVinci Robotic device and Dr. Samuel Kaufman focusing on single port laparoscopy. This allows our office to offer minimally invasive surgical options for the treatment of common gynecologic problems such as: fibroids, heavy menstruations, urinary incontinenceendometriosis and ovarian cysts, non-incisional permanent birth control to name a few. These new techniques can offer significant advantages over traditional "open" surgeries with less pain, discomfort, blood loss and a quicker return to normal activities.

Transition towards Electronic Medical Records
After our office suffered significant damages from hurricane Wilma, we took the opportunity to not only improve the physical appearance of our office, but to modernize our office with the introduction of electronic medical records, in order to improve patient care.
